Work that Reconnects

This is an experiential workshop approach developed over 30 years with strong Buddhist influences. Associated most closely with Joanna Macy who has taught it extensively, it is based on systems theory, deep ecology and Buddhist teachings of interconnectedness. “It demonstrates our interconnectedness in the web of life and our authority to take action on its behalf. It has helped many thousands around the globe find insight, solidarity, and courage to act” The four stage process starts with gratitude and moves on to forms which allow us to collectively honour our pain for the world, something we rarely have the opportunity to do. Then we learn to “See with New Eyes” and explore different ways of understanding time, power and connection. Finally the process moves to the Going Forth stage where we consider where the experience will lead us. A number of NEB members have training in facilitating this workshop form.

Socially engaged buddhism method

Socially engaged Buddhism requires us to draw on the many aspects of human experience, our emotional, cognitive, intuitive, visceral aspects need space within any learning environment. This presents a challenge for the retreat leader or event facilitator if she or he is to draw on all these aspects. Sometimes refered to as a holistic approach, there are various ways that these aspects can be drawn out. In the article Socially engaged buddhism method story telling, deep listening, structural analysis and a gallery walk are all described as ways to encourage participants to call on all of themselves to cultivate the wisdom and understanding we are seeking in socially engaged Buddhism.
